의미는 독자와 본문이 만남으로 발생하며, 이는 성경의 의미도 마찬가지다. 하지만 성경 읽기는 교리가 선지식을 강하게 형성하고 있어 실제로 읽는 것으로 볼 수 없다. 대표적으로 선악과 사건(창3)이 그렇다. 이 본문을 순수한 읽기의 태도로 다시 접근하면 매우 새로운 의미가 드러난다.

창조 기사의 첫 부분에 등장하는 ‘흑암’, ‘깊음’ ‘수면’ 등 어휘들은 고대 근동의 세계관을 이해해야 비로소 그 의미를 알 수 있는 표현들이다. 창세기의 창조 직전 상황은 혼돈이며 ‘창조’의 개념은 혼돈의 괴물을 무찔러 싸우는 창조자의 승리의 결과, 즉 신적 질서였다.
