About the word “Psalms”

The book of Psalms is composed of 150 individual psalms. It probably occupies the largest portion of the entire Bible in the Protestant tradition. The quantity may not have any special meaning, but I would say it is possible to think that the largeness indicates the book’s significance in the Christian canon. Well, anyway, this important book is called “the book of poetry” in Korean Christianity, which is a little different from other Christian communities in the rest of the world. The subject of this writing is, thus, about the implications (or problems) of the designation “the book of poetry.”

[책] 구약학자들의 시편설교

이 포스트는 2018년 ‘통합구약학회'(장로교통합측구약학자모임)에서 발간한 <구약학자들의 시편 설교>를 소개하는 글입니다. 이 책에는 저의 설교문이 두 편 실렸구요. 여기서 저의 첫 번째 설교문인 ‘우리는 어디로 가는가’라는 제목의 글을 소개하도록 하겠습니다.

This post introduces you to a book, a collection of articles (or sermon manuscripts) on the book of Psalms written by the Korean Hebrew Bible scholars who belong to The Presbyterian Church of Korea. I contributed to this book with two sermon manuscripts, the first of which is entitled “Where are we going?” following Paul Gauguin’s famous painting, Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going?)

“시편”이란 말에 대하여

시편은 무려 150편이나 되는 ‘시‘로 구성된, 신구약 성경을 통틀어 성경에서 가장 많은 분량을 차지하는 책이다. 분량이 많다는 것이 별 의미가 아닐 수도 있으나 굳이 의미를 부여하자면 분량이 많은 만큼 중요하다고 할 수 있을 것이다. 아무튼 이 중요한 문헌의 우리말 이름은 ‘시편‘이다. 오늘은 이 용어에 대해서 간단하게 한번 알아보자.
